Is Astrological Compatibility A Real Thing?
Astrological compatibility … is it a real thing?
I get this question a lot in my work, as people are trying to use astrology as a new tool in determining compatibility.
It’s no surprise either, especially considering the current prevalence of astrology in mainstream media.
But how do you figure out where to begin?
Well, today we are going to explore the concept of being astrologically compatible with someone.
Plus, I’ll reveal which are the best matches for each sign.
More Than The Sun Sign
I have to preface this by saying that knowing your (or a partner’s) “sun sign” is only one very small piece of the entire astrological picture. Having the full natal chart is very helpful for assessing how compatible people are. To do your full natal chart you need your birthplace and birth time. Click here to calculate your natal chart.
Knowing your Venus and Mars placements, in particular, is very helpful. These planets rule your sex, romance, aggression and love styles. The world of astrology is very in-depth and the more you learn, the more you realize there is to learn.
Astrological Compatibility Clashes
Before we dive into the matches, it’s important to note that if you and your partner are technically astrologically “incompatible”, it’s not a death sentence for the relationship. It doesn’t mean you can’t make it work or it will be a challenging partnership.
Be sure to look at the Moon, Rising, Venus, and Mars placements to see how compatible those are. It’s important to always remember that astrology is just one part of overall compatibility. Also, differences and clashes can create tension and excitement.
As the great Astrologer Linda Goodman says:
“Even between two individuals whose Sun and Moon Signs harmonize, there are always some planets in their mutual nativities which clash, causing periodic friction and tension. To overcome this is to become tuned in to the pulsing frequency of the Higher Self, to begin the climb up the pathway to enlightenment … to walk in magic, showered with miracles.”
Ready? Let’s dive into the matches.
(March 21 – April 19)
The Aries motto is “I am”, and their message is to teach that love is innocence, and their struggle is to learn that love is trust. Because of this, they can be very impatient, honest, stubborn, and rush into love headfirst. They often have a superiority complex.
Best Matches: Aries are very magnetic and lovable, and can pretty easily adapt to a lot of the zodiac signs. Their fiery nature is well suited to other fire signs like Sagittarius and Leo, but they can also match up well with the conversational dynamo sign, Gemini.
Worst Matches: The absolute worst match for Aries is another Aries! They love to be right and to feel in charge, and it can be a real power struggle to try and have two within a relationship.
(April 20 – May 20)
The Taurus motto is “I have”, and their message is to teach that love is patience, and their struggle is to learn that love is forgiveness. Taurean’s are very loyal, reliable, stubborn major homebodies, and can be prone to laziness.
Best Matches: There is only one sign that loves their home as much as a Taurus, which is Cancer. Cancerians can bring a lovely watery balance to the earthy Taurus, but sometimes this ends as both getting stuck in the mud.
They also do well with equally as earthy (but slightly more motivated) Virgo’s. My favorite pairing for Taurus is actually Libra, for they are both ruled by the planet Venus, and share similar core values.
Worst Matches: Taureans tend to have an interesting relationship with Scorpio’s. They either love them passionately or absolutely despise them.
(May 21 – June 20)
The Gemini motto is “I think”, and their message is to teach that love is awareness, and their struggle is to learn that love is feeling. Gemini’s are cerebral and excellent conversationalists, definitely the best zodiac sign at dirty talk. Being dual-natured, they can be quite compatible with many of the signs.
Best Matches: My favorite match for the dynamic Gemini is another Gemini. While this does feel like four people in one relationship, they can both handle what some can only wonder about. They do tend to do well with other air signs, in particular, Librans.
Worst Matches: Aquarians and Gemini sometimes make a match made in heaven, other times they are both so flighty it never takes off. The same goes for the aloof and hard to pin down Sagittarius folks. Either they both like the space, or they both play so hard to get that no one ever actually gets anyone!
(June 21 – July 22)
The Cancer motto is “I feel”, and their message is to teach that love is devotion, and their struggle is to learn that love is freedom. Cancerians are slow to open up, but when they do it’s a plethora of feelings. These feelings wax and wane like the moon they are ruled by, so they need a partner who loves the intensity when it’s positive, and can tolerate it (and not take it personally) when their mood turns dramatic and sour.
Best Matches: Cancer does best when paired with the other water signs, Scorpio and Pisces. They tend to be some of the few that can understand the depth and volume of emotions that live beneath a Cancerians hard outer shell. Taurus can be a good match too, with their shared love of beauty and staying at home.
Worst Matches: This one has to be Leo. They are too intense and firey, and it wears most Cancerians out pretty quickly. Cancers like a lot of consistency and certainty, and Leo’s like drama and adventure.
(July 23 – August 22)
The Leo motto is “I will”, and their message is to teach that love is ecstasy, and their struggle is to learn that love is humility. Leo’s love to be the center of attention and to have lots of affection lavished upon them. They also have huge hearts and are fiercely loyal to their close inner circle.
Best Matches: They do very well with the other fire signs, Aries and Sagittarius. Aries challenges Leo’s to grow and reflect, while a Sag pairing needs to be able to deliver the level of attention Leo’s need. For this reason, Libra and Leo can be a great pairing, as neither will ever tiring of hearing how great and loved they are.
Worst Matches: Leo’s can find water and air signs to be a bit frustrating, perhaps none more so than Pisces and Aquarius. Pisces have too many feelings and don’t smother Leo in the right way (though lord knows what that really is). Aquarians are just too hard to pin down and slow to open up for Leo’s, by the time they do, Leo is already on to the next.
(August 23 – September 22)
The Virgo motto is “I analyze”, and their message is to teach that love is pure, and their struggle is to learn that love is fulfillment. They are earthy and grounded, and need a reliable partner who makes them feel secure.
Best Matches: Virgo’s do best to partner up with the other earth signs, Taurus and Capricorn. Sometimes Taureans are too frivolous and lavish for them, so Capricorn is usually the better match. Virgos love the Capricorn work ethic and their no-nonsense communication style.
Worst Matches: Sagittarius is the trickiest match for Virgo’s. They are too flighty and fiery and don’t tend to share the same values.
(September 23 – October 22)
The Libra motto is “I balance”, and their message is to teach that love is beauty, and their struggle is to learn that love is harmony. Librans love equality, aesthetics, and attention. They can be very indecisive about what partner to pick, which can come off as being a player, but really they are just bad at decision making and second guess themselves.
However, once Libra chooses a mate, they like to settle down for life. They are extremely charming and adaptable and can make it work with pretty much any sign.
Best Matches: Cancer makes a nice match for Libra, lavishing them with affection in a way that might feel smothering for other signs. However, Librans have a bottomless pit for adoration and it’s never too much.
Worst Matches: Librans and Leos share a love of attention and affection, but also of opulence and drama. If they are both evolved, this can be one of the best matches, if not, it’s a perfect storm.
(October 23 – November 21)
The Scorpio motto is “I desire”, and their message is to teach that love is passion, and their struggle is to learn that love is surrender. It’s easy for a Scorpio to be intrigued by anyone, and you’ll often find yourself revealing the inner workings of your soul to a Scorpio before you even learn their name. However, it’s extremely hard for them to open up themselves. Once they do, you’ll have a partner for life.
Best Matches: Because of this, Scorpio’s do very well with other Scorpio’s. They understand what makes each other tick, and they know when to push for vulnerability and when to back off and give space.
Worst Matches: Aries. Scorpio’s hate being told what to do, or that someone else is right. Don’t even try with this one.
(November 22 – December 21)
The Sagittarius motto is “I see”, and their message is to teach that love is honesty, and their struggle is to learn that love is loyalty. Sagittarians are passionate, hard to pin down, and love adventure. They need a partner who stimulates them without smothering them.
Best Matches: While they can do well with other fire signs, they also are great with air signs. Gemini and Aquarius matches can stimulate their love of all-night deep and meaningful conversations and never smother them. Libran’s easy-going attitude and love for adventure is a fantastic match.
Worst Matches: Pisces and Cancer. Both water signs want to talk a lot about their feelings and move in on the first date. That’s a nightmare to many a Sagittarius.
(December 22 – January 19)
The Capricorn motto is “I use”, and their message is to teach that love is wisdom, and their struggle is to learn that love is selfless. They are very hardworking, direct communicators, and have a no-nonsense approach to love.
Best Matches: Taurus and Virgo are both good matches for Capricorns, as they share a grounded approach to life and earthy natures. However Taurus tastes are sometimes too lavish for the more fiscally sensible Capricorn, so Virgo tends to mesh more easily.
Worst Matches: Hands down, it has to be Aquarius. Aquarians are very ethereal, unearthly being, with lots of esoteric musings. They are a glaring clash to Capricorn’s straightforward sensibilities.
(January 20 – February 18)
The Aquarius motto is “I know”, and their message is to teach that love is tolerance, and their struggle is to learn that love is Oneness. Aquarians deeply value freedom and the pursuit of knowledge and humanitarian efforts. They are the most wonderfully weird sign in the zodiac.
Best Matches: Gemini and Libra are the two signs who best understand the Aquarian love of conversation and emotional intimacy, combined with their equal enthusiasm for space and freedom. Because of this, they can also do wonderfully with firey free-spirited Saggitarus, but this if often for a more casual fling, rather than a long term one.
Worst Matches: Capricorn! They feel stifled and misunderstood with Capricorns, and it’s like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.
(February 19 – March 20)
The Pisces motto is “I believe”, and their message is to teach that love is compassion, and their struggle is to learn that love is everything. Pisces have a lot of feelings, and are very interested in creative and mystical pursuits.
Best Matches: Pisces tend to do well with Cancerians, as they share their depth of feeling and desire for emotional intimacy and security. They can be a match with Scorpio, but sometimes Scorpions are too intense and hard to read for the tender Pisces.
They share a love of mysticism with Aquarians, which can make a good match for a time. However, the Aquarian desire for freedom rarely pairs well with a Pisces desire for constant intimacy.
Worst Matches: Saggitarius and Aries both tend to be too firey for the gentle Pisces. Aries can be too brash and deflate the Pisces without even realizing it. Sagittarians love of freedom will rarely blend with the Pisces desire for closeness.
I hope you enjoyed this exploration of astrological compatibility. Just remember that at the end of the day, the most important thing is that you can communicate with your significant other, and astrology isn’t everything!
