The Who, What & Where of the Hair ‘Down There’: The Politics of Pubic Hair

pubic_triangleIt seems like now, more than ever, women are pressured to do something with their pubic hair. The sexual politics of pubic hair have become less taboo to discuss in open forums like the internet and film.

Television shows like “Sex in the City” made a mark on the collective consciousness of American men and women alike, introducing us to sex toys like The Magic Wand Vibrator and the Rabbit but also to the variety of ways one can style their hair ‘down there.’ In addition to our philosophy on sex and love women could now consider their preferred grooming techniques when trying to decide whether or not they were a trimmed and proper ‘Charlotte’’ or a dyed and strategically shaped ‘Samantha.’ It’s clear that women have tons of choices regarding how to style their pubic hair but how do we know what is the right choice for us?

Both men and women are being forced to make the decision- to shave or not to shave? For some it can be a fun choice but others find it stressful. It’s your right to decide how you want to represent your body and you shouldn’t have to worry about how you might be judged. There are a few things to consider, when deciding on your preferred grooming technique and style.

Here are 3 tips on how decide what’s right for you:

Who: Some believe that as far as waxing (or any means of pubic hair grooming) goes- you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. We could examine the feminist social repercussions of that comment but instead, let’s just acknowledge the sentiment of that idea. No matter what you decide to do with your pubic hair you’re not going to please everyone- but who cares?! Consider who you’re grooming for. Are you in a relationship? Did your partner ask you to shave, trim or wax? How did that make you feel? Are you deciding to groom because you think a date  might like it that way? Are you doing it for you, maybe to be more comfortable or feel sexier? Whatever your motivation is, be in touch with exactly who you’re doing it for.

What: Now that you’ve given some time to thinking about who you’re grooming for its time to decide what mode you’ll use. In a recent Facebook post we asked what kind of hair you prefer. We got tons of responses, from guys that said women should be bald from the eyelashes down to one dude who’s turned on by a full bush. Get online and research all the pubic hairstyles you can try out. You can shave, either completely or with the guidelines of a certain shape. You can trim a bit of go all natural. You can wax, either traditionally or use a sugaring technique (supposedly less painful) and leave an array of shapes of landing strips. You can use a No-No Pro to ease the pain of hair removal. You can even get laser hair removal down there and if you ever decide that you want the hair back there’s even a pubic hair replacement surgery available.

Where: Now is the time to research the location of where you can get your preferred grooming. Use Yelp reviews and ask your friends for recommendations when it comes to finding a great establishment. Read customer comments with a keen eye and use your best judgement. When you arrive at the location make sure they know it’s your first time and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Make sure your waxing (etc.) technician is not double dipping into the wax and that all materials are sterile. You can also learn to groom in the comfort of your own home with the No-No Pro.
