If you’re sexually active, there’s a good chance you’ve heard these dreaded four little words:
“You should get tested.”
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are definitely the LAST things you want to be thinking about when getting hot and heavy, whether it comes up pre-or post-play. But with 110 million Americans infected at any given time, chances are you’ve felt that pang, knowing something isn’t quite right down there. And as awkward and uncomfortable (literally) as STIs can be, living with one that is undiagnosed is infinitely worse. Continue Reading

Do you consider yourself “in the know” on STD’s & STI’s? Well this is your month to catch up! Every April, the American Sexual Health Association (ASHA) recognizes STI Awareness Month as a way to bring more knowledge and understanding to the often taboo topic of sexually transmitted diseases and infections.
Sexually Transmitted Diseases & Infections… Just reading the phrase feels uncomfortable. We are conditioned at a young age to believe that STDs are one of the worst things that can happen to us and that if we catch one, our love lives are over. They are intimidating to talk about and are commonly misunderstood.
Having an STD is not a dating death sentence. Plus, all STDs are different; the bacterial ones are curable or treatable, while only a few (the viral ones) are incurable. They all have different symptoms that have different effects on our bodies, while some might not even display symptoms at all. And have I mentioned how common they actually are? According to the American Social Health Organization, one out of four teens in the U.S becomes infected with an STD each year. By the age of 25, half of all sexually active young adults may contract an STD. Continue Reading
In honor of Back to Sex Basics month, it’s time to address that elephant in the room: Your sexual satisfaction.
People seem to think that improving something as monumental as your sex life can only be accomplished by BIG moves, GRAND gestures and HUGE commitments, which is probably why they don’t make them. But I’m going to let you in on a little secret: there is actually an alarmingly simple move that will not only make your sex life better by way of stronger and more frequent orgasms, but is also beneficial to your overall health. So what is this mysterious sex life-saver? A special little squeeze called the Kegel.
Kegel exercises are the internal and controlled contractions of your pelvic floor muscles. The best way to understand the feeling and location of these muscles is to restrict your flow when you’re peeing; the same muscles that contract to stop your stream are the ones you can strengthen with Kegel exercises. One of the best things about Kegels is that they can be done at any time or place discreetly – like while you’re waiting in the airport, sipping a latte, for example. Continue Reading
Condoms are ubiquitous. When it comes to preventing sexually transmitted infections (and pregnancies), condoms are usually the first choice. After all, they are inexpensive, easy to get, and good at their job—most of the time.
Using a condom during intercourse can be up to 98 percent effective in preventing the spread of STIs. But condoms are only as good as their users. When used incorrectly or inconsistently, condoms can be rendered completely ineffective. Continue Reading
Everyone wants a healthy hoo-hoo. When it comes to vaginal health, there is something of a buzz-word that has been circulating the conversation. It seems to always be a factor, a concern, and a topic of interest when learning about the well-being of your vajayjay. I’m talking about (drumroll, please…)
The omnipresent component to keeping your clam happy. The thing that every women’s magazine, feminine product, and girl-part girl talk session alludes to. If your vaginal pH is thrown off balance, you may be rendering yourself victim to odor, irritation, infections and at the very least, bruised ego. So let’s break it down, piece by piece and finally crack this pH code.
