I arrived at Middlebury College with a feather in my hair and an appetite for adventure. The tiny liberal arts campus nested in the Green Mountains beckoned me like a hippie commune. No Greek life, no hazing. Only love, drugs, and progressive conversations around gender and sexuality.
On June 3rd, a rape victim shared the harrowing story of her assault in an open letter to her rapist. In her statement, she revealed details of her treatment following the vicious attack, the additional trauma she experienced during the trial and her utter dismay at the judge’s light sentencing—The attacker was convicted of 3 felonies, but was only sentenced to a mere 6 months in a county jail.
This horrifying event brought many issues to light: The harmful effects of privilege in our justice system, the shameful treatment of assault victims and the ever-growing epidemic of sexual violence on college campuses. Continue Reading
As someone who just recently put college in her rearview mirror (okay, it was two years ago, but still…) this time of year still hits me with a wave of nostalgia.
In grade school, September brought with it the memories of pencil boxes, crisp white notebook paper and the mandatory Lisa Frank trapper-keeper (don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about).
